Outdoor Rec GuidePicnic Areas

Interested in a more relaxing version of outdoor recreation? Grab a bite from one of Poultney’s eateries and have yourself a picnic.

Slate Quarry Park

Dedicated in 2022, the Slate Quarry Park commemorates the slate quarry industry, which has been major part of the economy and history of the Slate Valley for nearly 180 years. The park features patterned slate flooring and benches which are constructed from the variety of slate colors found in this area. There are three monoliths, each holding carved plaques that explain the formation of and the history of the slate industry in our area.  All of the slate was supplied by nearby quarries.

The park is an excellent space to enjoy a cup of coffee or picnic. It is located at 76 Main Street in Poultney Village east of the D&H Rail Trail (and Poultney River Loop), and approximately 4 miles west of Slate Valley Trails’ Fairgrounds Trailhead. The park is open from April through October.

East Poultney Village Green

Dedicated in 2022, this pocket park located at 76 Main Street in Poultney pays homage to the slate industry on which the region was built. The park features slate flooring, seating walls, an amphitheater and three slate monoliths bearing carved plaques. Open from April through October, it’s a must-see, and the perfect location to enjoy a picnic.
